Two Poems

The Autumn Breeze

on my neck
is a good excuse to recollect
you kissed me in September.

Fall’s vacant fingers
touch my neck once,
twice and I feel

the way you kissed me
and a prayer you spoke
that was never to be granted

but only to be shared
like the fickle blush
of Japanese maples by my window

which are soon to be
cold bald pencils
resting pointlessly
on my desk.

Making a Wish

Last night
looking at the light of two elevators
coming down slowly
you said they remind you of two trains
running parallel so close
that you can let go all the feelings
of where you are
but for me, they remind me of two stars
falling toward me so willingly
that I cannot miss them. I wonder
whether having two falling stars
means that I can make two wishes
or it doubles the chance of
one wish coming true.
When I come to myself and the stars are before us
it’s too late to make even one.
You ask what I want you to do for me
but my wishes cloud one another like stars
behind the sky. As you kiss me
I see two men walking quickly by us
holding two big star-
shaped lights for Christmas
with their firm, chapped hands
giving me the second chance to make a wish.
